All of that fun we had the other day with Pete Rose seems to have petered out, as Bud Selig is now telling people that he's not going to pardon the hit king. The Dayton Daily News' Hal McCoy thinks that someone got played:
I can sniff exactly what happened. It has happened to me. I wrote a story once and the next day Commissioner Selig was on the phone personally, straightening me out.
Madden is a close friend of mine and I respect him immensely. He is on the writers ballot for the Spink Award and Hall of Fame induction next year. He attends the Hall of Fame ceremonies every year and talks to all the Hall of Famers.
Somebody steered him wrong. I noticed there were no quotes from Selig on the story that he is considering Rose's reinstatement. Madden talked about Hank Aaron backing Rose, along with Joe Morgan and Frank Robinson. Somebody spoon-fed him false information - maybe even some of Rose's people, who have been known to do that.
Anyway, I suspect Selig called Madden on Monday and set the record straight.
Isn't just as likely -- and in total keeping with his past habits -- that Bud Selig was sending up a trial balloon to see how a reinstatement would play? And that, given what, from where I'm sitting anyway, looks like a decidedly anti-reinstatement sentiment, decided to walk it back?

Mr Selig is nuts!! Enough already, what kind a world is it when Michael Vick can play football again but Rose can not be in the hall for his exceptional play. Mr. Selig needs to remember Rose deserves the hall for his play, not his coaching.
Ignore the Rose debate, that was done in the blog on Monday. Instead focus on the validity of the original article that stirred that debate, as this article mentions.
Absolutely it is a ploy. Bid Selig is as well liked as the swine flu outside of the owners. And Pete Rose is THE issue of his current tenure since he has botched up all the other major issues under his tenure. He stays commissioner because he has heavily increased profits for most owners. I expect possible every year the Pete Rose Pardon question will arise and bet on Bud Selig starting most of those rumors to see if the public, the writers, and the players are on his side. To reinstate, he needs all 3.
Selig should be banned from baseball permanently. Remember when he attempted to close down the Twins. The Twins are the nearest competitors to the Brewers for TV ratings and money. Selig's sister owned the Brewers at that time (not sure if she still does). The Twins have 2 WS rings to their credit, and he wanted to shut them down as Commissioner. Why was all of this swept under the rug? His holier-than-thou attitude sucks.
I was there when Pete broke Ty Cobb's record for hits. For more than 20 years he put butts in the seat. He deserves to be in the Hall and Selig deserves a permanent ban.
I agree. Selig's conflict of interest in the Twins contraction talks was never talked about enough. It will be a great day for baseball when he's gone.
Actually, Selig himself still technically owned the Brewers, though I think his interest had been put in trust or something. His daughter was the named-owner. They have since given up all interest in the team.
That said, I think the Twins contraction was less about enriching himself and his family as it was about his buddy in Minnesota, Carl Pohlad, being very eager to be bought out by the other owners at a premium. He viewed the team as an investment, pure and simple, and if contraction came, he would have gotten way more than a simple sale of the team would have brought.
It was colluded out the ass, in other words.
Bud Selig is an owners commissioner. Profits are the only thing that matters. Nearly every decision the man has made has been wrong. Lets contract teams instead of move them. I mean the Twins made no sense. I can understand moving the Marlins. They win and have no fan base. But classic Bud, goes to help his friend with the Twins. Whats worse, the owners love him so he isnt going anywhere unless he feels like it. Could be another 10 years of this kind of crap...
Rose belongs in the Hall of Fame, and if there was a club even more elite than the Hall he would belong there too. Not because he is a great human being, he most decidedly is not that, but because he is one of the greatest baseball players ever. If anyone ever starts a "Baseball Hall of Really Exemplary Human Beings", Rose won't make the cut, nor will most of the other Hall of Famers.
I agree with you completely. I vote to allow Mr. Pete Rose into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Like I mentioned in my column, he didn't bite off an ear nor fight dogs. Seems like someone got to continue to fight as a boxer after biting off part of another mans ear, sent to prison as well as the other man. Who was convicted of dog fighting, killing dogs or whatever. And he is allowed to continue to play football. Pete Rose didn't do time, at least I don't think he did. Like I said, I vote for Pete Rose to be put into the hall of fame and it should be the very soon.
Is anyone's life but Pete Rose's going to change whether he gets in the Hall or not? I am way past the point of caring about Rose. Please let all Pete Rose stories go to the dust bin.
Madden is a close friend of mine and I respect him immensely.........
Oh boy, now I get it Craig....... I sent him the following e-mail:
YOU SHOULD BE FIRED AS A SPORTS REPORTER, YOU ARE NOT VERY GOOD AT IT. THIS IS GARBAGE AND I HOPE MINAYA HAS BETTER SENSE THAN TAKING ADVICE FROM YOU.YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF, BUT THE DAILY NEWS HAS NO SHAME.
He replied:
Thanks for the kind words. It’s always nice to get critiques from people who don’t sign their names, but in the future we’ll be sure not to report anything negatively about the Mets or anyone else.
I gave up, but now I UNDERSTAND YOU BOTH, you really want to work for GOSSIP magazines or possibly page 6, GOOD LUCK WITH THAT TO U BOTH......
Pete Rose, in my opinion should be allowed into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He for sure didn't bite off part of another baseball players ear during a game and he didn't fight dogs nor kill any dogs. Yet those two men, the one who bit off part of another mans ear continues to fight and most likely will be placed in the Boxing Hall of Fame; and, the other who was into dog fighting and killing of dogs will most likely play football again. As well as be put into the Football Hall of Fame. Gamble, so that is considered more of a worse case. No injury or damage to another person or animal, just gamble. It seems like, to me; money making people are whats in. I vote to ban Mr. Vick and Mr. Tyson both from ever being in any sport as well as to never be even considered for either hall of fame. My opinion !
