Daisuke Matsuzaka rips the Red Sox training regimen in the Japanese press:
"If I'm forced to continue to train in this environment, I may no longer be able to pitch like I did in Japan. The only reason why I managed to win games during the first and second years (in the U.S.) was because I used the savings of the shoulder I built up in Japan. Since I came to the Major Leagues, I couldn't train in my own way, so now I've lost all those savings."
The most interesting part is that, based on the original article in Japanese as relayed by WEEI, it appears as though Dice-K is telling the Red Sox that racial differences between Japanese and American pitchers require different physical training and rehab approaches. Yes, I'm sure that has everything to do with it and the facts that (a) Matsuzaka threw about 10 gazillion pitches a game while playing in Japan; and (b) wouldn't know how to work efficiently if an efficiency expert fell from the sky, landed on his head and started to wiggle have nothing to do with it whatsoever.
But hey, I'm prone to cynicism and I could be wrong. Indeed, maybe all Dice-K needs in order to get his arm back in order is a manager sympathetic to the racial differences in players. Just like you "don't find too many brothers in New Hampshire," maybe it's just the natural evolutionary order of things that you don't find too many Japanese workhorses in Boston.

It may be time to re-examine Theo's free spending ways. 5 years, 55 mil for J.D. Drew, 4 years 36 million for Lugo, 50 mil just for the privilege of talking to DiceK, another 50 mil over 6 years to keep him. There's almost 200 mil circling the drain instead of the bases.
Also, since one of the topics is race, has anyone else noticed that Theo signs an extremely high percentage of white, preppy prospects? Just look at the first names, I bet their families all subscribed to the New Yorker growing up.
High percentage of white? Wth does that have to do with anything? Im guessing your a minority? Ahh gotta love that reverse racism! Works so well for ya. My goodness, the Yankees must be racist because of the high number of hispanics and omg...the Celtics???? Theyre all most alll black...EVEN THE COACH!! Racists!!! And those Nazi, KKK Bruins!!! Lord have mercy!
Grow the heck up man. Yourre the type of person that cries racism but actually promotes it, uses it as a crutch, and sets people of color back 100 years.
Not just white guys Jay, but preppy white guys of the type that wore dirty white baseball caps for years at a time while growing up.
And by the way, I'm GREEN.

At this point, if I'm the Red Sox, it's time to throw your hands up in the air and go with it. You want your old ways back? You got 'em. In fact, they should hire his favorite trainer from Japan, just give him a million a year to come over and be DiceK's personal trainer and assistant. Keep him away from Jeremy Piven's sushi haunts, let him throw until his arm falls off. If it doesn't work, have you really lost anything? I mean aside from hundreds of 40-pitch half-innings.
Mo, you're on fire today! Great points, all!
Its always the Americans' fault....I just dont think that our program can be that much diffrent than theirs since isn't theirs based on ours....
Just like a spoiled american, It's mine, I want, I did,,,,,,,,,,,
no I in TEAM
IS GOD AMERICAN AS WELL ????
Dice-K
OK, try it your way, but, it better work. You've cost this team the loss of your services possibly for the season. Giving back some salary??????
Hey Dice K, give us your 2007 world series ring back
Hey. Great we have someone taking over for Schilling! A new whiner!
Schilling invented Baseball.........
Translation: I'm not allowed to take Furazabol anymore waaaaa. waaaaa. waaaaa!
I nominate Matsuzaka for the 2009 Al Campanis "Race as a Factor in Athleticism" award. May he wear it in the shame that he deserves. May-be he and his agent, Scott Boras, are trying to squirm out of another contract with Boston. Dice-K should concentrate on trying to pitch more than five innings per game.
Just another Boros whiner client getting paid the big bucks and finding excuses for not performing. Boros is a genius for convincing the saps (major league GMs) that his clients are supermen when in fact they never can perform to the outrageous predictions that he is able to get the saps to buy into. As despicable as he is, Boros is just doing his job...too bad the saps (including Theo) don't do theirs all too often.
What makes his comments more assanine is the fact that this past off season the Red Sox went out and hired away the top shoulder therapist/trainer from world renown surgeon Dr. James Andrews, to work with Smoltz, Penny, and now Dice-K. Penny's velocity now 94-98, Smoltz steadily improving velocity, and then there's Dice-K...suck it up.
Why hasn't anyone mentioned Dice K pitching his arm off in the WBC??
He never was that good. In today's world a pitcher only has to go 6 innings or a little more than 100 pitches - whatever comes first. Could someone please get the average number of pitches a starter has thrown per game in the last 5 decades - these guys are not over worked. Pitching mechanics are difficult for the arm/shoulder/wrist. It happens and the comments DiceK made are stupid. Looking for an excuse - not a solution.
Could Boras instructed Duisuke to say (oh yes, via the interpreter) to say that to try to deflect the blame for a poor season? I have lost total respect for Duisuke. What was his training routine during the WBC. He threw the ball great there, rejoins the Red Sox at the end of spring training and suddenly can't pitch anymore. How convenient!!!!!!
I've wondered what Dice-K would do if given the chance to throw 150 pitches, last year particularly (this year there was no point, as he was getting beaten like a drum throwing 100). So now he's bitching about training techniques? The idea of just letting him loose and saying "have at it" as suggested here by several people doesn't reflect the fact that the team is on the hook for about another 30 million in salary. So this is what Theo should say:
OK, you train and pitch as you want to. If you haven't gotten the snot hit out of you, we'll let you go 130 pitches plus but understand if the situation dictates it, we don't care how good you are going, we'll go to the 'pen if necessary.
But: If any part of your arm gets any sort of significant injury, your guaranteed salary for the remainder of your contract is cut in half. If your results do not improve, if the team chooses to release you, the balance owed on your contract is cut in half.
Put your money where your mouth is, Matzu-SUCKA.
(If you can't tell, I'm a Sox fan who has no faith whatsoever anymore this guy can perform at this level and can't stand when someone like that mouths off)
Talk abour racial profiling. Dice-K really seems to be saying that Japanese arms are oganically different from American arms. The Red Sox should nicely, but firmly, tell him that he nees to shut up and do as he's told.
Yeah, where does he think he is, America ??? CrazY people in Japan
I don't know how many pitches per inning he threw in Japan, but the AL East is home of the extended AB. Hitters are judged by how many pitches they SEE per at bat (meaning take or foul off). You don't beat a good starter, you run up his pitch count and take your chances on middle relief. Good pitchers realize this and start pounding the strike zone. Really good pitchers get outs that way, marginal ones get hit.
Daisuke is a nibbler. He throws 20 pitches per inning; he seldom finishes the 6th. He might as well intentionally walk the first three batters every inning, since he doesn't really go to work until the bases are loaded. And now he has shoulder problems. Suprise suprise. This is the same guy who declined to participate in the Red Sox shoulder training program -- and now he blames it for his shoulder problems. Typical Boras BS.
But hey, I'm prone to cynicism and I could be wrong.........
Craig the GREAT WRONG......... THAT COULD NEVER HAPPEN.................
Craig, I noticed your photo and let me say , you will never be called " slim "........
have you ever taken part in ay physical activity like playing SPORTS
It sounds more like the 100,000 pitches he threw in Japan are catching up to him...At least he got $100 M for showing up in America.
Boston should go back to what won them the World Series......
STEROIDS ...............
But don't tell that Mitchell guy...........
roids killed the game . i have a nephew that threw in the uppers 80s with movement in th Phillie org in the Roid daze. he cut cut several times becasue hitters smacked him around... MANY of the are on the Mitchell report or are always being mentioned as 'takers' He had his career CUT off by Roides
his brother was playing 2nd string[ D1 linebacker] football and quit becasue he would not take the inhalers and crap they wanted him too before the game
we would rather be us and honest then to be them
