The Padres are cutting office staff:
The San Diego Padres have eliminated between 10 and 20 positions as part of what new CEO Jeff Moorad calls the first step of a reorganization of the team's business operations . . . "What this is about is a reallocation of resources that is intended to give us the most economic flexibility when it comes to supporting the club on the field," [Team CEO Jeff] Moorad said.
I can't help but think that it's also about the tremendous liquidity problems owner-in-limbo John Moores likely has as a result of his divorce. Which, one must remember, is what prompted Moorard to buy into the Padres in the strange, path-to-ownership way that he did.
But no matter the reason for the cuts, money is fungible, and money saved on the player side of things can do far more to enhance "economic flexibility." In other words, if they're sacking employees making five figures to make ends meet, one can't help but think that they're strongly considering selling off their truly valuable assets as well.

"Between 10 and 20" -- yeah, right. Baseball is the game of numbers, and they cannot nail down a number in that small range and cardinality?
That means the layoff was actually between 19 and 20, and they wanted it to sound a bit friendlier in the press release.
You get a vote Craig just for using the greatest logo the Padres have ever had. They wore their 1975 unifroms in a 2006 throwback game against the Astros and I wish they would just go back to that. It was a 30 year-old design and it looked fresh and current. No one else uses those colors. I'm so tired of watching Brewers-West Coast!
Why they ever got rid of the swinging friar, I'll never know.
And I think people think back to the old Padres uniforms and just assume that they were all the same. There was actually a lot of variety in those brown and yellows from year to year, with the mid-70s actually looking pretty good.
You're right Craig, everyone remembers the solid yellow uniforms, and the solid brown/yellow tops that are so notorius in uniform history. The 1975 beauties get forgotten.
