Alfonso Soriano got an unexpected day off yesterday, and he wasn't happy about it:
Soriano was miffed when he learned his name wasn't in the starting lineup Wednesday after he had a pair of hits Tuesday night.
"That's why I'm mad," Soriano said. "If he had told me yesterday, then I wouldn't come today ready to play . . . I think he could have said to me last night, 'OK, take a day off,' especially because [Thursday] is an off day. I'd be like, 'OK, I'll take the two [days].' But I like to know before I come here."
Look, I don't for a second know what goes into preparing to do battle on a Major League ballfield. I mean, I'm sure there are all kinds of samurai-like rites and rituals involving incense and self-flagellation and everything else, and that whether one endures it all is contingent upon whether one knows ahead of time if one is going to be in the starting lineup. But it does strike me that even if one knows he's not going to play that day, that one would still, generally speaking, come "ready to play."
More seriously speaking, I can see it if Soriano was mad that he wasn't playing because he, you know, wanted to play, but being angry because he was forced to mentally prepare himself to play for a few hours on a Wednesday morning makes little sense to me.
What is Soriano really mad about? If he knew he wasn't starting ahead of time would he have had a slumber party with the girls the night before? Watched the entire fifth season of "Stargate: Atlantis" and made nachos? Why doesn't the media ask the things we want to know about?
More importantly, what's Soriano gonna do about it?
Asked if he would talk to Piniella about his complaint, Soriano simply replied: "No."
OK, then.

Soriano realizes he plays for an NL team, right? I hear NL managers like to employ the occasional pinch-hitter, among other strategies.
Waaaaaah. What an overpaid baby. Sori should concern himself more with remembering how to hit a baseball with a bat.
Hmm, sounds familiar...
Fletcher: You - -LIAR! You know what I am going to do about this?
Motorpool Guy: what?
Fletcher: Nothing! Because if I take it to small claims court, it will just drain 8 hours out of my life and you probably won't show up and even if I got the judgment you'd just stiff me anyway; so what I am going to do is piss and moan like an impotent jerk, and then bend over and take it up the tailpipe!
You've been here before, haven't you?
Perfect quote for Sori's reaction, well done MJ.
See? I don't hate everybody.
As a Cub fan this is a sad example of what is wrong with the Cubs this year and baseball in general. Even for the ML minumum salary every player should arrive at the ballpark ready to play, sit or carry the ball bag if that is what the team needs him to do on any given day.
Soriano thought the 2 hits the previous night was a reason to insure his presence in the line up? If I remember correctly...both SINGLES were with 2 outs in an inning. His other 2 ABs that night, with runners on base in an eventual 2-1 loss, resulted in outs.
If he was having a Pujols type season than yes, I can see Soriano would be upset over a day off whether he was forewarned or not. I'd settle for Soriano having a Pujols type week spread out over a 2-3 week period. Even that would be more than Soriano has provided for the Cubs offense the last couple of months.
