* Things have gotten so bad for the Mets on the injury front that Jose Reyes and trainer Ray Ramirez were rear-ended by a firetruck yesterday while driving to the hospital for a check-up on the shortstop's strained calf. Seriously. No one was hurt, but the Mets' season is starting to resemble the plot of those Final Destination movies.
* During a radio interview this morning, Ryne Sandberg said that fellow Cubs great Sammy Sosa shouldn't join him in the Hall of Fame. Coincidentally, today is also the 25th anniversary of "The Sandberg Game."
* Joe Mauer is on the cover of this week's Sports Illustrated, which means that doofuses can focus on the silly "cover jinx" when his batting average inevitably falls below .400.
* Speaking of the Twins, general manager Bill Smith doesn't seem to care that the bullpen has been an obvious weakness since the middle of last season.
* Alex Speier of WEEI.com wrote a lengthy and interesting behind-the-scenes look at the Red Sox's draft.

Mets stink!! Phillies are going to win the NL EAST again!! Mets are soooo overrated!
Coming into the season the Mets still had such a promising future. They had arguably 4 of the top 15 players in all of baseball (Wright, Beltran, Santana and Reyes) who were all still either young or relatively young. They were almost bound to win it all eventually if only they could surround those four with decent enough supporting players.
But oh, have the fates changed. Injuries have put the futures of three of those core players into question. Reyes probably has the least injury worries, but now there's questions as to whether he was ever as good as we thought he was going to be. Beltran's knee could be a serious issue that saps most of his defensive value, possibly even prompting a transition to right. He certainly won't be the same on the base paths anymore. Santana also has some health questions now, and you just have to wonder how much longer he can continue to pitch at elite levels.
That leaves only David Wright as the lone healthy superstar, but as he's taken his batting average and base running to new levels, he's suddenly forgotten how to hit home runs. Hopefully that power will return. While Wright has been decently consistent as a hitter, he has been streaky in the past when it comes to power...
