According to the Chicago Tribune (and a bunch of other sources) the Cubs are scouting and seriously considering signing Pedro Martinez.
I love Pedro as much as the next guy, but why on Earth are the Cubs doing this? Pedro's career line is .134/.124/.258! There's no way he can solve the Cubs' problems.
Wait, you say they want him to be a pitcher? No, that can't be right, because measured by ERA, they have the best starting pitching in baseball right now. They don't need him. Given that they're 11th in the NL in runs per game and sinking (they've been shutout or scored one run ten times over the last 25 games), certainly their scouts are looking at him for his bat, right?

All the cubs need to do is start hitting, another pitcher won't help there problems.!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you citizen john for adding nothing to this post. Do you believe you've said something not already stated?
That stat about the last 25 games is revealing. Reminds me too much of Houston 5 or 6 years ago. During one of those seasons in which they had little to no offense, however, they were in the WS, if my memory serves correctly. I'm not predicting the same for the Cubs, but I think a bat or two (maybe in the line of ) would give them a huge push. The bigger question is who they can move that would attract teams to give up any kind of bat.
it's a puzzle, but if he were to sign with the Cubs it would give them the luxury of trying to trade some of their pitchers for a bat....Harden, Marshall and/or Wells being the most likely to get dealt....possibly Lilly, but I think he has a NTC.
Thank you Travis! You restated the premise of Citizen's post and did it using a about 5x as many words! The Cubs need hitting, duh! But, who are they gonna get? In a trade, other teams are gonna want pitching...signing Martinez possibly gives them room to make a trade for the hitter they need while replenishing their pitching or possibly without depleting it as much, IF he performs well enough to be included in a trade. After all, there's a reason no other team has signed him.
Maybe a trade to get Mark Derosa is possible because that was when all there trouble started they lost a really great team player.
the cubs have a baseball cultural & organizational problem face it,until this team is sold to someone that loves baseball this will be the lovable cubbies & losers.
Yes. Soriano has an OBP of .290 because the owner doesn't love baseball.
Derrek Lee lost his power starting when he broke his wrist a couple years back because the owner doesn't love baseball.
Geovany Soto's having a rough sophomore season at the plate because the owner doesn't love baseball.
And, of course, Aramis Ramirez dislocated his shoulder, not diving for a grounder, but diving to bring love of baseball to his team's owner.
Cubs need bats not arms. And I guess they have 5 million dollars in payroll flexibility if they do in fact want to add someone.
They need a focus and backbone for the team and for players like Ramierez, Soriano, Zambrano, and Lee. Pedro has that - he never seemed to be afraid of anyone. And he of all folks can keep Z in line.
The Chicago Cubs: Where proven veterans past their prime live out their playing days in exchange for giant contracts and years of under performance creating frustration for Cubs fans everywhere. I agree that signing Pedro will not help this team. He is probably past his prime and that money would be better spent getting DeRo back.
Cubs NEED STEROIDS, it makes BASEBALL BETTER.......
no what the cubs need is middle relief...every year they over spend on vets to ride the pine...i.e. Aaron Miles, Reed Johnson, John Mabry, Cliff Floyd and creating too many stupid platoons that dont work out anyways.... spend on middle relief and use more younger rookies still trying to impress their way into the bigs like Hoffpauir, Fox off the bench...almost like the wizard of oz...Howry, Eyre, and Cotts oh my!---those guys cost at least 2 world Series titles!
