In case you missed it yesterday, here's what Brian Bruney had to say about Francisco Rodriguez after Friday's game:
"Unbelievable, I've never seen anything like that. I have, but in high school. Couldn't have happened to a better guy on the mound, either. He's got a tired act."
He continued:
"He gets what he deserves, man. I just don't like watching the guy pitch. I think it's embarassing."
The quotes were worthy of some chuckles initially, especially considering the fact that Bruney can't stay on the field, but the two pitchers almost came to blows before Sunday's game. Peter Abraham of the Journal News relays the story:
Francisco Rodriguez tried to confront Brian Bruney during batting practice today and was held back by Jose Veras. The incident attracted enough attention that several Yankees, including C.C. Sabathia, came over to keep the peace. Bruney was in left field as the Yankees were finishing up their BP. The Mets were coming into the field at the same time and Rodriguez went over to Bruney and appeared to be yelling at him.
There were rumors of a video that showed Rodriguez pushing Bruney, but that appears to be false. K-Rod tried to get to him, but was held back by Mike Pelfrey.
When Abraham asked Bruney what happened, the pitcher said:
"We talked about our dinner plans. That was it."
Who said the Subway Series had lost it's luster?

Bruney should spend more time working on his game and less time running at the mouth and looking for fights. Even then his stats won't compare with K-Rod's.
Bruney is a very classy guy, a fan fav. KRod acted like a classless bum. KRod cheers himself, his accomplishments; not his team's or his teammates achievements. Bruney stated the truth-it is old.
Nobody wants to watch a selfish attention grabber, mitigating the efforts of his teammates as K-Rodriguez has done time after time. All Bruney was stating was his opinion, which no doubt the press blew up, out of porportion to grab ratings.
And no doubt KRod acted like a two-yr old, used by the press the get those ratings. Grow up K.
You can't wave a saber rattle and earn the big bucks-the two just don't go together.
You've got to shut up and play the game. Both of them need to act like the highly paid professionals they are. Bruney doesn't have the qualifications to talk about other players, but K-Rod should have just brushed it off and asked if Bruney actually pitched, or just commented on others. I just hope Bruney doesn't have to face him in the future.
That K-Rod got that upset about what some AAAA pitcher has to say speaks volumes about his makeup.
When Joba expresses his emotions, he's a Hot Dog. When K-Short pumps his tiny fist up and down and jumps around...it's okay?
...and don't give me the K-Rod has a history of sucess crap...when Joba was coming out of the pen he was K-Small's equal...if not more effective.
Bruney's right...the guy is reading too many of his own clippings. And if he is so much more the professional than Bruney with his time in the league, why is he acting like every ever little guy with a big chip?????
K-Boy shouldn't be carrying on like a Little Leaguer.
I'm sure Bruney has said the same thing to Joba, right? Sure he has.
Perhaps people criticizing Bruney as "AAAA" should know that when healthy, he is a highly effective 8th inning guy - probably better than anything the Mets bullpen has to offer outside of "KRod". Not sure why he decided to open his mouth...but he has a point.
Expressing emotions during a tense situation, or a big game, is great. Doing it EVER Y SINGLE TIME you play - well that is "Hey look at me, aren't I wonderful!"
EVERYONE-Bruney is not AAA, nor is he some bum.
He is our 8th inning reliever, second closer, and one of the best Yankee arms in the pen.
Bruney is one of the best arms the Yankees have. He is injured, but in no way is he a regular to the DL. His injury could be the result of the many, many, many innings he pitched for Torre, holding down the pen for the Yankees, from that terrible 05, 06, 07 seasons where we had weak starting rotations.
Give him his credit. He is a team player, by far an large moreso than Krod. Bruney has sac'd his own record, stats for a "W" many times, for the sake of the team.
He is great with fans. He signed for fans, spoke to many of us at spring training. How many players will do this? Not many.
The Mets knew what they were getting in K-Rod. It's not like this is a surprise.
And K-Rod is in the record books for most saves in a single season. What's with the Yankees fans defending Bruney?! Neither of them are in the right in this particular situation. K-Rod shows emotion on the mound. Why do people have a problem with that? Yankees fans would love him if he were heir to the Rivera thrown. He gets amped up and if he can last as long in the MLB as Rivera (a hell of a tall order) could go down as one of the greatest closers ever. Of course he needs to show up in the postseason to even be considered in the same light... Rivera's 0.77 postseason ERA in 117 innings is absurd.
