| Oswalt follows in Peavy's footsteps
|
White Sox general manager Kenny Williams keeps trying to acquire a big-name starting pitcher and they keep spurning his advances.
Last week Williams worked out a trade for Jake Peavy only to have the Padres ace use his no-trade clause to block the deal and now the Houston Chronicle reports that Roy Oswalt "would invoke his no-trade clause if the White Sox attempted to acquire him."
The report about Oswalt comes amid speculation that the White Sox have been scouting him for a potential deal. Interestingly, the newspaper notes that Oswalt and Peavy are good friends and Peavy said during the offseason that he'd "embrace a trade to the Astros," but apparently neither guy wants to pitch for the White Sox.
Meanwhile, the White Sox have won three straight and are 9-3 over their last dozen games, climbing into second place in the AL Central ... at 24-25.

Peavy didn't want to make the jump to the more challenging AL and switch from a pitcher's park to a launching pad. Can't say as I blame him.
I heard Oswalt has some lingering animosity toward the Sox from the 2005 WS and he'd rather not face AL hitters as his skills decline.
The hitting in the AL is tends to be better only because of the DH.
What a joke these 2 selfish guys are. Either one should jump at the chance to pitch for Guillen who lets his starters pitch out of jams and gives them plaenty of rope. Sometimes he tends to trust their stuff too much.
I say they're selfish for all they want to do is pad their stats in a league where the pitcher bats.
Let them both rot with their respective teams for neither one will smell the playoffs while the Sox have a legitimate chance to win the division. They did last year.....when can either team say that ( other than '05 when the Sox smoked the 'Stros in 4 straight).
Guillen also destroys starters' arms/careers. Not everyone is as freakishly durable and consistent as Buehrle.
They're both making rational financial and personal decisions. It's not their faults that their clubs gave out dumb contracts. This is how it works.
Did anyone consider that they may not want to pitch in the Chi Sox stadium, known as a hitter's park? Just .like most pitchers used to shy away from Colorado. And if the Yankees don't fix it, they won't want to come to Yankee Stadium either unless the money's too good to pass up, which is a distinct possibility with the Yankees.
I think Kenny needs to look at some younger less expensive 4-5 starter and lets see how richards does for now. No rush were not cub fans ya know.
Agreed RA. Richard seems to be solid and who knows what Poreda can do ?
I DO think that Williams will make a trade for an arm though.
I'll pitch for the Sox. But be forewarned. I throw like Calvin "Nuke" LaLouche.
I tend to think both these guys lack testicular fortitude. I thought you play the game to win championships...and if you make a ton of money along the way it's a bonus.
I can't believe "professional" baseball players would rather rot on bad teams and protect their ERA's than compete for a possible World Series.
It's everything that is wrong with baseball. Especially in Peavy's case where the Padres are in dire straights and needing to get rid of him...and the White Sox badly wants him.
Pro baseball players can be such prima donna's.
Both Oswalt and Peavy signed "no trade" contracts for a reason - no doubt they left money on the table because they wanted control over where they ended up.
If the White Sox want them, then I'd assume they need to be ready not only to deal for them, but to bump up the money some to get them to waive their no-trade clause.
San Diego could have avoided this by refusing to give Peavy an no-trade clause. Then again, Peavy would have likely gone somewhere where they would ... or at least required a bigger contract from San Diego. And since Peavy turned down the deal - SD has been on a pretty nice run as well.
Sox are beginning to play to their ability level. The national press has been ignoring them, let's see how long it takes the writers to catch on. This is a good ballclub. Despite injuries that would have sunk most teams, they found a way to win the Division last year. Oswald and Peavy may be watching the Sox on the tube next October.
Well, Peavy and Oswalt will regret it. Our team is starting to play the way it should, getting the timely pitching and offense we need, especially ever since we will soon be heading into a five game set against the Detroit Tigers, a very important set in which we must win three out of the five games in order to continue our gradual climb back into things. Detroit isn't going away, the Twins aren't going away, but as long as we continue at this pace we have a very good chance, getting several 2/3's and sweeps will propel us back into it.
Anyone stop and think that maybe.... just maybe.... They don't want to play for a team ran by Kenny Williams? That guy is a D-bag!
