| How about Milwaukee?
|
With the White Sox not working out, Jorge Says No! renews his long-held belief that the Brewers are the best destination for Jake Peavy, citing, among other things, the stability of Peavy's contract situation and the fact that the Brewers have a lot to offer in terms of prospects. He finishes with this:
Many of the same reasons why I thought the Brewers should go after Peavy in December have remained almost identical to now. But the major difference is that the Brewers have played very good ball so far this season and have proved to the rest of the league that they are for real. The goal is no longer to replace Sabathia and Sheets, but instead, to make a major push towards the playoffs in 2009.
When it comes down to it, the opportunity to add a top flight starting pitcher rarely presents itself nowadays. The Brewers need to at least explore the market for Peavy and see if there is any chance of making this a reality.
I can't say I disagree with any of that. And if I were Milwaukee, I'd move quickly, because the faster they move, the more likely it is that the pressure will increase on Peavy to finally approve one of these trades lest he look like a prima donna. If they wait too long, that pressure will dissipate.

Just as i thought. He knows he would have been eaten up by the AL. Best for him to stay in the soft NL and look like he is an above average pitcher instead of possibly a below average one.
That's a stupid comment. Jake is one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. To say that he would be a failure in the AL is ridiculous. The reason he is not going to Chicago and the reason he will not go to Milwaukee is because of his family. At this point the only teams he will probably go to are the two LA teams.
You are wrong about Jake only going to the L.A. teams; Jake wants to win and his preferences are to a team that can win now that is in the National League. He has said as recent as spring training that one of his preferred clubs would be the Chicago Cubs. Kudos to Jake for not accepting the trade, he has a no-trade claus and will use it until he gets what he wants.
The AL is a joke! Half your stadiums are the size of hat boxes, everybody's up there swinging out of their ass trying to hit it out, and the manager fills out a line up card and then sleeps through the rest of the game. As long as you have the DH you'll be a joke. You guys don't even play real baseball. You play a game that closely resembles baseball!
The NL has it's own issues, but at least they play the correct rules.
Joke? AL has won 11 of the last 17 WS and the NL has not won an All Star Game since 1996....Stadium size please Philly, Cin, Hou, ect look at the numbers pal, the AL had 3 parks with over 2 hr a game avg. The NL, 8 parks plus Flor was 1.99. These are 2008 numbers. So you are and idiot.....
Yeah he would have had to go to home run friendly US Cellular field instead of pitching in the great expanse of PetCo Park. Also facing a DH instead of a almost guaranteed out when facing the NL pitchers outside of Micah Owings and Mike Hampton. Dont get me wrong; he is a great pitcher but his numbers away from home speak for themselves. His ERA away from PetCo is a whole run higher than his home ERA. The Brewers are a good match, but as a Cardinal fan I would love to see him in red if they wanted to spend the money which I dont see them doing
The is from my blog at websoulsurfer.com so I am going to put it in block quotes.

As a long time Brewers fan, I'd be shocked if they made this deal. Yes, the attendance has been way up this year, and Mark Attanasio has shown a willingness to put money into this team that previous owners have not, but the Brewers total team salary is currently $80-90 million, which is really the most this team can manage. I can't see them adding a commitment to pay $10-15 million additional for the next few years, nor could I see them trading away any more top prospects after losing some top minor leaguers last year in the Sabathia trade. We're not the Yankees; we can't afford to gut our minor league system and have a $100+ million payroll. Yes, we are winning with the team we have, which is why they are going to leave this one alone.
$10-15 Million? Your talking about the people who paid "Gag"ne 6 mill.. The should trade for him, but I hate to see what they would have to give up...
Nice to see Peavy putting himself before the good of the San Diego Padre organization. This will be a lesson to ownership - no more "no trade" clauses in contracts. Screw Peavy - the White Sox don't have or want selfish guys on their team! I can only hope Peavy is traded to the Brewers before June 12 so the Sox can tatoo his ass all over Miller Park!
If the Padres were so worried about him puttng himself in front of the team, they shouldn't have given him the no-trade clause. It takes two to tango, and since the team willingly tangoed, they can't be heard to complain about it now.
That is without a doubt the dumbest comment I've seen in a while! "Nice to see Peavey put himself before the good of the San Diego Padres organization". What, he's supposed to go to a city and team he doesn't want to go to so the Padres can better their OWN interests? That makes him selfish?
TLaP, if your company said they were going to send you half way across the country, to a city you didn't want to live in (San Diego vs. Chicago? What are you kidding me??), to a company with a jackass of a boss you had no desire to work for, make you move your wife and kids, so they could save some money and get some other workers in your place, I suppose you'd go? For the good of your COMPANY?!? What a laugh!!
Peavey is right to get his. Selfish player? When was the last time you saw ANY team put a player's desires ahead of their own? Dude, you are a comedian!
And from what I've seen of the Sox this year, there ain't too many pitchers worried about the prospect of seeing them.
The only way they could take on his contract would be if they could unload one, like that of Jeff Suppan ($12.5 this year and next). Plus, they already gave up a lot in the CC deal last year, I don't see them depleting their farm system any more.
Peavy is a strikeout pitcher and 1 of the most competative players ever. He would thrive in any ballpark.
I think the Brewers would part with the cash. The problem is that they do not want to part with anymore prospects. I think it comes down to whether they think they can win it all if they get Peavy. Presumably Peavy would have to feel the same way or he would exercise the no trade clause. Thats where Weeks' season ending injury comes into play. The Brewers just do not know how much losing Weeks is going to hurt them.
The Brewers will not go after him. Even with an increase in attendance, the organization will still probably end the year in the red. With contracts the likes of Mike Cameron ($10 mil) Jeff Suppan ($12.5 mil), Fielder's ($7.0 mil and rising), Braun's recent contract, and the commitment to signing the young guys in the organization to long-term deals (Gallardo, Parra, Hart, Hardy, and Gamel to name a few), signing Peavy makes no sense. They just cannot afford it. I would love to seem him in the Brewer's rotation, but he'd have to take a pay-cut to do it. Plus, the Brewers are an organization that is listed in his no-trade clause. He would have to go against this for the trade to progress. A couple things the Brewer's do having going for them though that might make Peavy consider waiving the clause is that they are winning, have three former Padres in Cameron, Hoffman and now Gerut, and are gaining notoriety as having a great clubhouse. Last year's blockbuster, however, was what was needed to give the team confidence and experience as winners. Now that this young team has gotten the experience, they're moving forward with the winning attitude and passing it on to the 'kids' they progressed through the minor leagues with (look at Prince and Braun taking to Matt Gamel, especially after his home-run the other night). Only token free-agent roll players are used to fill the line-up are added because the front-office is committed to youth and building from within. They know that parting with too many more prospects is out of the question if the program is to avoid another 26 year playoff drought.
The Brewers lose Cameron's 10 mill contract and Kendall's contract next year and will prolly replace them with two minor leagurers or a minor leagurer and a cheeper contract for Kendall, they can afford Peavy. Melvin said they want to make a move mid-season. Alcides Escobar is expendable and the Padres need a SS, with two aces in the wings for the Pad's I don't see this as a problem. Pad's would like a SP caliber player, and I could easily see that being Para, you're trading three expensive years of Peavy for four affordable years of Para. We have plenty of talent in the minors still, it doesn't stop short of Gamel and Escobar. Gamel has to be untouchable, and if JJ leaves, I wouldn't doubt that Lawrie would move to SS, he's versatile. That's what made him a great number one pick was his willingness and ability to play where ever, his defense isn't Hardy's or Escobar, but his bat will leave thoughts of defense in the dark. And with Cutter Dykstra moving to 2b, I think we have all our bases covered for a Peavy trade. I say Parra-Escobar-Taylor Green and maybe Cole Gillespie, not one hole the Padres have that isn't covered there, even thought they're only position secured is 1B. Plus they us one, Inman for Linebrink? Steal
Opps, meant that "they owe us one" at the end there
As I Brewer fan, I would be surprised if GM, Doug Melvin would even pursue a trade. We lost too many prospects in the CC deal, and I don't think the Brewers would part with Alcedes Escobar, (our best player in the minors) the player that the Padres would demand. One last point, Trevor Hoffman might have some inside influence.
Towers said during the offseason that he would like to acquire young pitching in return for Peavy and it was reported that the White Sox deal would bring back 4 pitchers, including Poreda and Richard. But the top prospects for the Brewers are mostly position players. They'd love to get Alcides Escobar at SS but I doubt they would settle for any deal not including a potential front-line pitcher (i.e. Poreda). Evan Anundsen is having a great year I'm not sure he would be enough to get it done. Jeffress is considered one of their top pitching prospects but he's struggling badly with control this season. Am I missing anyone that would be a good fit in a deal for Peavy?
3 teams make sense for Peavy.
The issue with Peavy is what he'll demand after his contract is up. Only a handful of teams can afford him. He's worth every penny.
Texas - They have young players they can ship to SD, including Taylor Teagarden who'll need to be traded in order to catch.
Angels - Brandon Woods! Something has to be done with this kid. He's tearing it up in triple-A, but there's no room for him in the roster.
Dodgers - this makes the most sense. If the Dodgers were hated so much by SD, he would be a Dodger by now. He wants to go there and they want him. Dodgers might have to give up Either or Pierre and a few young pitching prospects. But .. Peavy, Kershaw, Billingsly, Kuroda.... OUCH!
He wants to go to a winner? Then why in the heck would he want to go to the cubs? The biggest losers out there. Oh, i see why, its the weakest division to play in. He could pad his stats even more. Pit, Cin and Hou. The cubs are just a mediocre team but get to pad their wins against a bunch of weaklings. Anybody who understands baseball at all could see the cubs were 3 and out again last year. In the playoffs they have to play against good teams. Im sure if they could face pit and cin they would roll to the WS.
If the Padres recent win streak is any indication on their play the rest of the season, then I would guess that he stays put in San Diego. If it looks as if the Padres have a chance to compete with the Dodgers for the Division Title, then there is no way he gets traded.
