Randy Johnson is limping his way towards 300. He was shellacked on Saturday, giving up seven runs in four innings in a loss to the Mets, and he has allowed 18 runs on 27 hits in the past 14 2/3 innings. For now he's stuck on 298.
His next start will be against the struggling Mariners in Safeco Field. After that, the Giants play the Braves and Nationals, the former being a team against whom he has had some success, the latter being a team that is having an historically bad year. To the extent one roots for such things, one would hope that he can rack up win number 299 and 300 during this swing, because the longer this goes on, the more, well, pathetic it will ultimately become.
But I suppose it could become more pathetic. For example, the Giants could truly go out of their way and do for him what the Mariners did for the guy when he was in need of a milestone number.
One hopes it doesn't come to that.
