Lou Piniella on Saturday when asked whether it was risky to use Carlos Zambrano as a pinch hitter as often as he has lately: "What's the risk? He's going to bat four times Sunday."
Carlos Zambrano's fate following Sunday's game:
Carlos Zambrano, who picked up the win in Sunday's 6-4 victory over the Marlins, spent Sunday evening with an MRI machine after straining his left hamstring as he beat out a bunt single. Even if the injury isn't considered serious, Zambrano most likely will be shut down.
Well, there's your risk Lou. Sure, it didn't happen in one of his pinch hitting appearances, but it could have very easily.
Given that a healthy Carlos Zambrano is an absolute essential if the Cubs wish to catch St. Louis, I suppose we can assume that his pinch hitting days will be over upon his return.

i thought for sure he'd have hurt himself pinch hitting....pull an oblique while trying to put one out of the park...
But really, what are the chances Zambrano will be called on to attempt a bunt while pinch-hitting?
It wasn't so much the bunting as it was the running, wasn't it? Same thing could have happened on a grounder to short.
Could not have happen to a bigger jerk.
Zambrano is not the first starting pitcher to be used as a pinch hitter. Tom Glavine filled that roll several times with the Braves.
As far as injury goes, that is something that could happen every time a player, let alone a pitcher, takes the field. It is part of the game.
i was listening to this game on the radio. i was def upset to hear big z hurt himself. we need him, cause not all the rest ofthe pitching staff is pulling their weight. lilly is warming up. dempster certainly isnt as good as last year, and the bullpen, while shaky, is better than last year. hope big z gets well soon, we love him here in chicago.
Z's trying to be a complete player. It happened when he made that last long stride. No bigger risk that when he covers first on a bunt that D-Lee has to pick up. All pitchers should be able to hit and run. Or, do we need a cart to take the from the dugout to the mound every inning so they don't overexert themselves.
That would be Michael Barrett posting under the handle "jbird"
J bird, what makes Zambrano a jerk? He's overly pumped up on the mound, yes, but I've never heard him referred to as a jerk, or thought of as a jerk by other players. (Other than Barry Bonds, and Michael Barrett), both of whom are world-class jagbags™.
To be honest, I'm glad it's gonna give him time away from pitching. There's a ton of mileage on that arm and a break here and there wouldn't be the worst thing...
Micah Owings does quite a good job of pinch hitting...perhaps better than he does pitching!
